An empowering approach to therapy...

Simeon Cave BSc (Hons) Counselling & Psychotherapy MBACP

Clients come to therapy for many different reasons, and each client is unique. I endeavour above all else to offer a compassionate, confidential, empathetic space for healing. Over the years I have learnt that the most effective approach to therapy is adapting to the needs and individuality of each client. To do this I draw from some of the most effective interventions and trauma-informed approaches available – always considering what the client feels is best for them. Self-empowerment and autonomy lie at the heart of good therapy. Together we will navigate your feelings, actions, thoughts and behaviours and with compassion and respect, navigate a path to greater authenticity, self-agency and healing. I don’t take this work lightly; I am privileged to share in my client’s journey and aim to create a working relationship established on a foundation of deep trust. The greatest joy is seeing clients thrive!

What is my approach to therapy?

Did you know there are over 500 types of therapy? My therapeutic approach is integrative and humanistic, meaning that I draw on a variety of therapeutic models to tailor the process to each individual’s unique needs. The foundation of my practice lies in the belief that each person has an inherent ability to heal and grow, given the right conditions. I aim to provide a safe, empathetic, and non-judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences at your own pace. Integrative therapy allows me to blend different techniques, depending on what resonates most with you. This flexibility helps to address the whole person, considering not just the symptoms but the underlying causes. The humanistic aspect emphasises you as an individual—valuing your lived experiences, perceptions, and choices as central to the therapeutic process. This approach fosters a collaborative relationship, where your voice is at the heart of the healing journey.

How can therapy help?

Therapy provides a structured yet flexible environment where you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself, your relationships, and the patterns in your life. By working through thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, it can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma, among other mental health issues. Beyond symptom relief, therapy can be a pathway for personal growth, enabling you to gain insight, build resilience, and develop coping skills.

Some of the challenges that therapy can help with include:

  • Anxiety and stress management

  • Depression and mood-related difficulties

  • Relationship issues, including family, friends, or romantic partners

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress

  • Low self-esteem and self-worth

  • Grief and loss

  • Life transitions and adjusting to change

  • Personal development and self-discovery

Everyone’s journey is different, and therapy can also serve as a space to reflect on one’s values, goals, and aspirations, ultimately leading to a more fulfilled and meaningful life.

Is this approach right for me?

Choosing a therapeutic approach that resonates with you is an important step towards a successful outcome. An integrative and humanistic style may be particularly beneficial if you prefer a personalised, flexible approach that can adapt to your evolving needs. It suits individuals who are looking to understand not just their symptoms but the deeper emotional experiences and relational patterns in their lives.

If you value a collaborative process where the therapist walks alongside you, rather than directing the conversation or prescribing specific solutions, this approach could feel empowering. It's also ideal if you’re open to exploring different therapeutic techniques, as integrative therapy can bring together elements from various models to support your growth.

To decide if this approach is right for you, consider the following:

  • Do you want a therapy experience that feels personalised and flexible?

  • Are you interested in exploring the root causes of your difficulties, rather than just managing symptoms?

  • Do you value a collaborative, empathic relationship with your therapist?

Ultimately, the most important aspect of therapy is that you feel comfortable and understood. The relationship with your therapist plays a crucial role in your progress, so it's important to choose someone with whom you feel a connection.

As I started my journey to heal my personal traumas, searching for a practitioner to help me, I was often left with the traumas still deeply rooted, and still yearning for the person I knew was within me. Working with Simmy has been transforming! I actually feel as though I've been heard for the first time. Simmy's approach is unique, and I'm so glad and privileged to work with him! Thank you very much!

The Process

1 / Assessment

In the initial session of our therapeutic process, I conduct a comprehensive assessment to gain a deep understanding of your unique needs and experiences. This assessment includes a thorough evaluation of your mental and emotional state, and your therapeutic history – ensuring that my approach is tailored to support you in a way that resonates with your values and life perspective. This is also a chance for us to explore our initial sense of working together and answer any questions that you might have. If we both feel a resonance in working together effectively, we will have the opportunity to finalise our therapeutic agreement.

2 / Regular Sessions

A typical 50-minute Zoom therapy session begins with a warm welcome and a brief check-in to help you settle in and share how you're feeling. We may start with a grounding exercise to help you feel present and ready for the session. We'll then take a few moments to revisit key points from our previous meeting, discussing any progress, challenges, or insights that have emerged since then. The main part of the session is dedicated to exploring the topics or concerns that are most important to you, whether it's working through difficult emotions, examining patterns in your relationships, or addressing a specific issue. We'll use a flexible approach, drawing on different therapeutic techniques as needed to help deepen your understanding and find ways to move forward. In the final few minutes, we'll review the session, and discuss any reflections. This structure aims to create a safe, supportive space where you can reflect, gain insights, and make meaningful progress.

All sessions are conducted online via ZOOM
